My daughter turned eight last weekend and I wanted to make her day feel extra special without spending a fortune. A few days earlier, I popped into our local shop and picked up some simple party supplies: a balloon arch kit, a paper cake stand, treat bags, and some sweeties. All of it came to about £6.

After she went to bed, I got to work on the decorations. The most challenging part? Blowing up the balloons! Thankfully, the kit came with a manual pump, which made the job a bit easier but I’m seriously considering investing in an electric pump for future parties.
It took about an hour and a half to get everything looking just right. And when she woke up the next morning, her face lit up. She was absolutely thrilled. That moment made all the effort worth it. It’s amazing how a mini table setup can bring so much joy to a child’s party.
Parenting Reflection:
What this reminded me is that it’s not always the big, elaborate things that leave a mark; it’s the little surprises, the thoughtfulness, the magic we create in quiet moments. Kids remember how we made them feel and sometimes, a £6 setup and a bit of late-night balloon pumping is all it takes to make a memory that lasts.
