What if, this year, we stepped away from the pressure of big New Year’s resolutions? After all, parenting isn’t a 100 metre sprint with a clear finish line. It’s ongoing, evolving, and never truly “done.” Recognising what already works can be far more effective than chasing perfection.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on those wins from the past year. Which routines or strategies genuinely made life easier or more enjoyable? Perhaps it was the sleep routine that finally stuck, the meals the kids couldn’t get enough of, the screen time limits that brought some peace, or a weekend activity that became a family favourite. Even the small things, the moments that made you feel like a happier, more present parent, deserve a nod of recognition.

So, rather than making “brand new” resolutions, let’s focus on carrying forward the habits that worked and adding little tweaks where needed. Keep the sleep routines that helped everyone feel rested, sign the kids up for the extracurricular activities they loved, plan meals that everyone looked forward to, and schedule weekend activities that bring the family together—whether that’s a park trip, a bike ride, movie nights, baking together, or a quiet reading hour. Don’t forget the small daily rituals too, like morning stretches, bedtime stories, homework check-ins, or simply sitting down for a chat. These are the moments that build connection, laughter, and calm. Focus on what made you a happier, more present parent and let these guide your year, rather than chasing a long list of goals that may feel out of reach.

It isn’t about becoming a complacent parent. It’s about noticing the small, everyday moments that, over time, add up to real growth and progress. Being present and alert with your children matters, because some of these experiences can’t be recreated. Share these moments with your kids and let them see that growth isn’t about perfection, but about consistency and building on what works. Take a moment today to reflect: what routines, habits, or activities from last year do you want to carry forward into this one? Celebrate them, tweak them if needed, and let them shape your parenting journey in 2026.

What about you? What routine or activity worked well for your family last year that you’re looking forward to carrying into the new year? Share your wins in the comments and let’s inspire and encourage other parents along the way.

One extracurricular activity our girls really enjoyed last year was netball, so we’ve signed them up again this term. It gives them the chance to bond with children outside their class, learn to work as part of a team and have something to look forward to each week.
